You know, way before I woke up, I was semi-aware of the "old light" history of the organization. I made a comment to my father with all sincerity (and it's something I stand by to this day): "We might look back and laugh at some of the ludicrous claims and teachings that the Society dispensed not even fifty years ago. I promise you that in fifty years, the new wave of Witnesses will look back at what the Society is telling us is 'truth' today and laugh at our silly old light." His response was, "well, if you really think the world will continue for another fifty years..." and trailed off. I didn't miss a beat. I said "YES! Because fifty years ago, they didn't think the world would be around for another five years!" I've never believed in the new system. Not even when I was in the organization. I could never see this world coming to a cataclysmic/divine end the way the Society presents it.

Spiritual Junk Food?
by stuckinarut2 inwe all know how the society likes to say that they alone "dispense spiritual food from jehovah" through the f&ds / gb.
the claim was that from russell's day, the society alone is gods channel.... so that got me thinking.... if they dispense spiritual food, yes spiritual nourishment to all witnesses, that clearly implies that all the past wrong teachings, and incorrect doctrines and practices must not have been "nourishing spiritual food" right?.
in effect, they were just like parents that order a fast food drive through "meal" to keep the kids happy and fill the hole in their tummy.. yes, rather than providing a well prepared and healthy nourishing meal, a quick-fix junk food fill was sufficient.

@scratchme1010 You actually underestimate the brazenness of WT's demands for members to "shut their ears" to any information from outside the WT. I'm not kidding - that's their actual words. In a fantastic twist of irony, here is the FINEST example of propaganda in this article about... propaganda:
Propaganda 101: Instill fear into the hearts of your victims. Opening words of this latest WT article? "YOU are under attack!" The rest of the article is a contradictory battery of nonsense, terrifying Witnesses from looking outside WT approved literature. Sad. Really sad.

@doubtfull1799 Trees touched on the "free will" explanation given to those who question why we live in a state of despair instead of paradise. It's always funny to hear "God created us with free will." That is a self-cancelling statement in itself.
JW: Do you not agree that God created us with the gift of free will?
Thinking Humanoid: Of course we have free will! That's what the Boss gave us. We have no choice but to have free will.
Really. Just think about it.

@Chook Ouija boards are successful due to something called the Idiomotor Phenomenon/Reflex. It is derived from the terms "ideo" (idea, or mental representation) and "motor" (muscular action). The phrase is most commonly used in reference to the process whereby a thought or mental image brings about a seemingly "reflexive" or automatic muscular reaction, often of minuscule degree, and potentially outside of the awareness of the subject.
Think of it like this: the glass on the board only moves when it has contact with hands. If no one were to touch it, would it still glide on its own?
If you want to give the idioemotor effect a test for yourself (without invoking the spirits of the underworld), go grab a hand-held pendulum to hover over a sheet of paper that has keywords written on it such as YES, NO and MAYBE. In response to any questions asked, the small movements in the hand will cause the pendulum to move towards key words on the paper.
Edit: Just read what @Island Man wrote above. Long story short: what he said.

@Nimble Duck: "I would really like to read the thoughts of an evolutionist as they lie on their deathbed."
Well, Nimble Duck. You no longer need to read the thoughts when there is plenty of information available for militant athiests on their deathbeds. One such example is the late, great Christopher Hitchens. On his deathbed, he remarked that the prospective of an afterlife appeared even more hollow than previously. In an interview prior to his passing, he had the following to say:
COOPER: In a moment of doubt… there might be a moment when you want to hedge your bets.
HITCHENS: If that comes, it will be when I am very ill; when I am half demented, either by drugs or by pain. I won’t have control over what I say. I mention this in case you ever hear a rumor later on, because these things happen and the faithful love to spread these rumors. I can’t say that the entity, that by then wouldn’t be me, wouldn’t do such a pathetic thing. But I can tell you that… not when I’m lucid, no. I can be quite sure of that.
COOPER: So if there is some story that on your deathbed–
HITCHENS: –Don’t believe it.
I suppose the only triumph one might consider of a last-minute conversion to Christianity is, at least the world will be losing another believer and not an atheist.

Convention invitations
by dothemath inso everyone is supposed to get all excited about the invitation work starting tomorrow, according to the announcement from the platform.. maybe this makes sense if you're giving out invitations in the city where the convention is, but what if you're many hours away?.
a huge part of western canada is scheduled to attend edmonton alberta this july.
so how does that go over giving out invitations in winnipeg, about a 13 hour drive(that's just driving time).. i know some are actually planning on flying there, so i can't see getting excited about getting the public to make the trek.. i was curious how this is going over in other areas?.

@LV101 Yet, there's always an astronomical "deficit" read out during the announcements.

book advice about the 'jw experience'
by cobweb ini'm looking for a book recommendation about the jw experience for the audience of a non-jw friend.. here is a scenario: you have recently left the jw religion and have made a friend who has little knowledge about your old religion.
you would like them to understand more about you but at this point you feel awkward about explaining your religious background and don't feel confident that you can make them 'get it'.
you decide you would like to give them a book that will do the grunt work of explaining it all; one that will give them a deeper insight into your former world than you feel able to provide, which will additionally explain why it is that you are now in the position you are, friendless, unsure of many things and adrift at an age where most people have got their life sorted.. if someone were in this situation and needed such a book, what you recommend?.

I haven't read either, but have heard good things about "The Least of God's Priorities" by Bo Juel, and also I'm Perfect, You're Doomed by Kyria Abrahams. Both are said to be page-turners in their own right with autobiographical implications and make for a fascinating read (as opposed to the more analytical style found in Apocalypse Delayed by James Penton, for example, where there's much heavy information to wade through).

Human element seen in 10 commandments
by venus ini appreciate 10 commandments because they try to ensure law and order in the society.
however, i have problem with introductory statements that say: “you shall have no other gods before[a] me… you shall not bow down to them or worship them; for i, the lord your god, am a jealous god, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.” (exodus 20:3-6).
1) this contradicts the characteristics of god described in mathew 5:44-48 where love is described as loving everyone without thinking whether others reciprocate or not.

Thank you, @Saename! Looks like you well-versed on more than just evolution. Fascinating insight you've given on ancient Greek text!
